• The Tension Between Biblical Purity And Cultural Relevance In Seeker Churches
  

  • In the last twenty years, a new style of church has influenced the landscape of Christendom.  Commonly referred to as seeker churches these churches put a greater emphasis on reaching the unchurched through contemporary services and have developed their style of ministry by learning from churches such as Willow Creek Community Church and Saddleback Valley Community Church.  Most of them are experiencing success in reaching greater numbers of unchurched people and seeing them become followers of Christ.  However, there are also voices of concern and criticism asserting that, far from building the church, this style of ministry is detracting from the Biblical ideal of the church.  The purpose of this thesis is to describe the tension between cultural relevance and Biblical purity, to identify and evaluate concerns with this approach, and to offer suggestions as to how seeker churches can maintain Biblical purity.  Using bibliographic research, it takes a look at the potential compromises of Biblical purity in adopting a seeker-focused approach to ministry and argues that it is possible to be culturally relevant and to maintain Biblical purity.
