India 2009

(For an audiovisual report of the India trip click here)

In October, after the conference in Scotland, I was in India for three weeks of pastors conferences and evangelism. Here are the stats for the whole trip: 30 days, 2 countries, 20,745 miles, 157 hours of travel by car airplane, train, boat, car, jeep, cab and foot, 6 cities, 4 towns, 10 villages, 5 Pastors Conferences, 8 Evangelistic Events, 6 Sunday Services... exhausting but rewarding... hundreds of pastors and leaders encouraged, hundreds of new believers in the Kingdom! Despite floods (in Andrha Pradesh), Hindu festivals (Diwali), and power outages, it was a great time of ministry! My host was Dr. Victor Nandigam of Grace Gospel Ministries who oversees hundreds of pastors and churches in rural India. He also runs an orphanage (as does his brother Franklin). We are now supporting an orphan from each orphanage (let me know if you want to do this too; they each have 30-40 kids requiring $300 support per child annually).

Victor writes: "I am praising God for the wonderful time that God gave us during your trip to India. All our brothers again and again told me that they were really blessed by your ministry. Thanks also for supporting a child in the orphanage." Feedback from other pastors and leaders included:

  • "Through this conference I learned how to apply the Gospel to leading my church and ministry...thank you."
  • "I learned again to go to the Lord Jesus for everything and not depend on my own strength."
  • "God has greatly strengthened me by showing me the many ways that He loves His people"
  • "Through this conference I feel like I have been born-again --- again!"
  • "Very encouraging...I will now proclaim the Word of God more boldly in the villages and towns of India"
  • "I have been greatly spiritually encouraged!" (Pastors wife)

Scotland 2009

I made a quick visit to Scotland in September (on my way to India) primarily to teach at The Heralds Trust Leadership Conference held near Edinburgh (I served in ministry with The Heralds in the 1980's). Here is some of the feedback from pastors and leaders:
  •  "A wonderful reminder of the worth and value of the Gospel as an ongoing
    experience.  Very powerful! Truly inspirational!"
  •  "Renewed my faith, challenged my living"
  •  "Great to have the gospel put back at the head of life"
  •  "God spoke to me very powerfully...He lifted a burden to perform"

Brazil 2009
(for an audiovisual report of the trip click here)

I was recently in Brazil, in the city of Barra Mansa about 2 hours west of Rio de Janeiro. I asked in the last newsletter, "Please pray that I would preach the Gospel clearly and that many would find new life in Christ." Your prayers were answered! I have been preaching for 30 years in many countries around the world and NEVER, EVER seen fruitfulness and encouragement like I saw in Brazil! The first week, about 160 pastors attended a superbly organized Congress on Evangelism. I shared the teaching and training with a good friend, Cecil Peasley, South African evangelist and Director of Living Ministries International. It was a delight to see the pastors encouraged and fired up for all the events of the second week. The second week, we were joined for the evangelistic events by hundreds of volunteers from the churches as well as teams from South Africa and U.S.A. Throughout the week, we preached door-to-door, in the streets, in factories, schools, homes, in halls and auditoriums each night---anywhere we could be heard.  An estimated 500 people came to Christ throughout the week! I have NEVER, EVER seen a hunger to hear and a readiness to respond to the Gospel like I saw in Brazil. It was a wonderful, invigorating, humbling, and fulfilling experience. I cannot begin to tell of all the changed lives but I KNOW I must go back next year (for a full report see Newsletter archive September 2009 Vol 4 Issue 3).

South Africa 2008

I spent a month doing evangelism and teaching groups of pastors and Christians all over South Africa. Why do I visit and why do I plan to go again?
  1. South Africa has a strong Christian heritage that still affords the Gospel a hearing
  2. South Africa is uniquely positioned to train leaders from all over Africa; in Africa the church is exploding but desparately needs trained leaders
  3. South Africa is at a crossroads with poverty, AIDS, violence, crime and death as daily realities for many
  4. South African Christians and leaders believe that Christ is still the answer --- and they need our encouragement and prayers!

For four days I taught at the infamous Pollsmoor Maximum Security Prison --- "home" to 7,000+ inmates, the notorious "numbers" gangs (26's, 27's, and 28's) and, formerly, home to ex-President Nelson Mandela. The chaplain, a former inmate with Mandela, invited me to teach a group of his Christian leaders! Teaching groups of pastors and evangelists is a privilege but this group was among the hungriest and most attentive I have ever spoken to! Living an open Christian witness in a gang-ridden, drug-infested, overcrowded prison is only possible with Christ's help---pray for these men. I grew to love and respect them over our days together. All of them asked for my teaching notes for later study. One of our partners writes, "Peter ministered in many disadvantaged African churches with very little or no financial resource. He also went into Pollsmoor Prison and was used greatly of God in the lives of staff and prisoners. Peter unselfishly gave of his time, energy and gifting for which we are so grateful….His anointed preaching and teaching of God’s Word was greatly appreciated by all the churches. Please send him back again for our 2010 Soccer ‘World Cup’ Bible conference. We need his passion and compassion!” (John M Doyle, Executive Director, Cape Missions International, Cape Town, South Africa).

I also taught at the national Conference for the South African Association of Evangelists.  Here are some comments:
  • "Peter, your transparency and honesty have been a great encouragement to me in my gospel music and prison ministry. You shared profound truth with us in great depth. Thank you to all who support you and made it possible for you to come ..."
Oscar Ehrensperger, Gospel Musician, South Africa
  • "The nights and days I've spent here listening to your teaching have been greater than 16 years full-time ministry as an overseer of a group if churches in Uganda...I thank God for you..."  Pastor Jospeh Kaweesa, Uganda
  • "I was blessed by every word you spoke...wonderful and motivating...your teachings will beautify the ministry God gave us..."  Pastor Peet Wilken, South Africa
  • "God challenged me to go and preach the Gospel to all nations but also to live according to the Word of God"  Evangelist Wandile Ngccobo

Nepal Pastors ConferenceI recently met "Jesus" on the shores of Galilee and took this photo of him!  Amazing, huh?  I was walking along the shore where John 21 took place (Jesus resurrection appearance to the disciples as they were fishing).  I honestly prayed that I would have a meeting with Jesus; I was scheduled to speak in South Carolina on John 21 at an Easter service on my return to USA.  Stunned and speechless would best describe my reaction when I came across "Jesus" sitting on the rock.  I had stumbled upon a movie crew filming --- guess what --- John 21!  Amazingly, the week after Easter I was scheduled to speak in Ohio on  Joshua 11 and  was able to tour the  ruins of the ancient city of Hazor a mere 10 miles from my hotel.

India & Nepal 2008

Nepal Pastors Conference
Thank you to the many who responded to my prayer requests for the trip to India & Nepal. Things went very well despite many obstacles.  I taught at two pastors' conferences and preached at several evangelistic events. Many pastors, evangelists, and church leaders were encouraged (see sidebar) and many people came to Christ.  I was deeply touched listening to the joyful singing of so many believers who are committed to sharing the Gospel with their people. Believe me, your prayers were greatly appreciated!  Perhaps that is why the team (from Hope & Help Internationa, with whom I travelled) pressed on despite lost suitcases, a stolen passport, power outages, a distracting demon-possessed girl at some of the evangelistic events, recurring sickness (I still have a bad case of the infamous "Delhi-belly"), and a national strike in Nepal!  This  last  disruption resulted in the conference being re-located to a different town on the Nepali/Indian border.  But the team rallied and the conferences went ahead with no security problems whatsover!  THANK YOU FOR PRAYING!

In November,  it was good to see old friends Lee Strobel and
Mark Mittleberg at the National Outreach Convention.  We go all the way back to Willow Creek in the late 1980's!  They often spoke at events at the church I pastored in Atlanta. They both serve on the PreVision Partnership Board of Reference (see www.previsionpartnership.com/Boards).
It was so good to see that their passion for the the Lord and to reach the lost is as vibrant and enthusiastic as ever!  That is no small matter; pray for these guys and others like them to be daily renewed, revived, and refreshed in  their ministry of evangelism and teaching.  And pray the same for me!

I just got back from Greece in October from a fabulous PreVision Biblical Tour-with-a-Purpose (see more on these tours at "Holy Land" above).  While there, I had the awesome privilege of speaking to about  150 Greek twenty-somethings at an event hosted by Hellenic Ministries.  As the band played, I was in awe of the view of the Acropolis through the window!   As always, it was good to see Johnathan and Alex Macris, seen here on the roof of the building  for a time of prayer before the start of the event

I also got to meet with and encourage several church leaders during and after the tour on mainland Greece and the islands.

Left is Panagiotis (Panos) Karakolidis with Hellenic Ministries in northern Greece; he is being photographed in Philippi down by the river, not far from where Lyida became the first of Paul's converts on European soil.  I have been involved with Panagytois in several evangelistic campaigns; he calculates he has given out over 500,000 pieces of literature in 6 years!

Below right, Stephan Calhoun (who answered God's call to Greece while I was pastoring Cumberland Community Church) and a local church leader on the island of Aegina (and, yes, those are all coffees on the table!).

My trip to South Africa in June was wonderful.  The month started with a Men's Retreat just outside Johannesburg at the Youth For Christ center at Cyara (an acrostic for "Come Ye Apart and Rest Awhile" from Mark 6:31 --- neat huh! --- see www.yfc-cyara.com).  The theme was Amazing Grace and I enjoyed teaching several hundred men over several days.  Best of all, eight men who had been invited by friends put their faith in Christ at the end of the reatreat (photo above).  I also preached at several churches and meetings in the Johannesburg area and visited Kruger National Park.  I got to see four of the big five (elephant, rhinoceros, buffalo, and leopard) and heard the fifth (lions ---roaring at night near a lodge in another game park).  Then it was on to Cape Town where I spoke at a number of churches and did several evangelistic talks for the business community.  Much to my delight, one of the venues was the Newlands Cricket Ground (a function room not the stadium itself --- photo right).  I also spoke at several events for Hellenic Ministries (Dr. Nico Bougas, who had arranged all my speaking engagements in South Africa, serves on the HM Board with me).

Then it was on to Durban to teach at several more churches and a men's event.  I finished up the month by teaching at the Annual Conference for  the Association of South African Evangelists.  This was a great honor especially as I shared the platform with Peter Pollock, the world famous South African cricketer, Rev. Fred Shabalala, and Angus Buchan, of "Faith Like Potatoes" fame (see the movie website here www.faithlikepotatoes.com and the ministry website here www.shalomtrust.co.za.  It was a great privilege to share with these and other faithful servants of God in attendance, whose life is spent sharing the gospel.  The Conference was at the African Enterprise retreat center in Pietermaritzburg and I was warmly encouraged in my teaching by Director Michael Cassidy, whose work I have admired from afar for many years.  At his invitation, I will visit and teach there again.  We then took the opportunity to visit the farm of Angus Buchan, from where he runs an Africa-wide evangelistic ministry. He also runs a Childrens Home on his farm.  Children the world over love a good game of soccer --- and so do I!
